Ways to Stay Active This Winter

It can be extremely difficult to motivate yourself to workout when the temperatures are below freezing. The past few weeks in Massachusetts have been brutal with temps below freezing, arctic wind chills, and even some days in the single digits. This frigid weather can detract from your desire to get in your car (that you have to let sit and heat up for 20 minutes) to drive to the gym or take your dog for a walk around the block. Luckily, we have made it through the 10 darkest weeks of the year and it will continue to get lighter later.

Snow Activities

In the past two years, I have become more apt to do outdoor activities in the winter. Some of my favorite things to do in the winter are actually the fitness/outdoor workouts.

  • Snow shoeing
  • Skiing/snowboarding
  • Winter walks/hikes (with boots and lots of layers)

Indoor Gym Classes

Some of these “classes” don’t even involve leaving the house. I love taking classes at my local gym (my favorites are hypertrophic strength, metabolic conditioning, spin, and arms/core/glutes). However, I have also become a big fan of taking Peloton classes (on and off the bike) or youtube pilates classes. Some of my favorite youtube workouts are linked below. (Yes, I included Chloe Ting and yes the music does give me war flashbacks to 2020 and Covid).

Making Daily Chores More Active

I love doing my daily activities like blow drying my hair, putting away laundry, and applying my makeup with my arm weights on my wrists. Although they only weigh 1lb each, they definitely have an impact when I raise my arms up or have to keep them elevated like when I do a blowout.

We are out of the dark ages!!! The countdown to spring, longer days, and days above 32 degrees begins. Only a few more weeks of suffering through brisk temperatures until we can go for walks outside with just a light sweatshirt and shorts on!

Xoxo,
