Cold and flu season is sadly here and tearing through the UMass campus. I am currently fighting the cold demons and can say I am over it. The colder months bring sickness and the sniffles. Here are 15 remedies to survive the sickness season!!
- Hot shower/ steam it out
There is nothing better than steaming out all of your sickness and congestion with a nice hot shower. I love using shower steamers that go in the corner of your shower and elicit scented steam that can eliminate sickness. Another way to steam out your sickness is to boil some water and place your face above the bowl of steaming water with a towel on your neck. This can help clear your sinuses.
- Spoonful of honey
Despite how much I love sweet things and honey in my coffee and tea, I haven’t tried this one. However, a spoonful of honey can be really beneficial for a sore throat.
- Cold plunging or a freezing shower
The complete opposite of the hot and steaming shower, a freezing shower can be really soothing and awakening to all your senses. Cold plunging can be nice for malaise or sore muscles.
- Chicken noodle soup
Obviously had to include the most basic cold and flu solution. A hot bowl of chicken noodle soup truly can cure the soul. The broth is good for your immune system and the warmth is a great comfort.
- Tea with honey
I am not a hot drink person. But, when I have a sore throat or am fighting a cold, there’s nothing better than a mug of hot mint tea with a spoonful of honey mixed in. Chamomile tea is perfect when you are trying to fall asleep.
- Peppermint essential oil
This one is especially helpful with naseau and to clear sinuses. Apply a little peppermint essential oil to your nose and upper lip area and a little behind your ears. This will calm your mind and naseous feeling as well as apply relief for your clogged sinuses.
- Sunlight and fresh air
It can become harder to get more sunlight and fresh air as it turns to winter. Even just a few minutes in the sun and sitting outside can soothe the soul and help cool down a fever. Sometimes while I’m sick I lay in bed with my window open.
- Lemon ice water with salt
It sounds like a crazy combination but this drink can have amazing health benefits. The lemon water will help make you feel refreshed and clean and provide some vitamin D and digestion help. Add a small amount of salt so that the taste isn’t even noticeable. Salt water can cleanse your dietary tract which can help cure sickness and eliminate toxins that may be causing you to feel so ill.
- Hot bath with rock salt
Again, the best and the steam is amazing for your sinuses. The hot water mixed with the salts with help soothe and relax your body and muscles. Light a minty candle and enjoy. This will feel therapeutic and make a world of difference.
There is nothing worse than feeling sick. I hate when my time is taken away from work, school, or friends because I feel too ill to do anything. Using some of these hacks can help nip your sickness in the bud before it gets worse. I am wishing you all good health and sunny days!!
