It’s not news that fall in New England is gorgeous. The bright colors of all the changing leaves, the chill in the air, and the constant smell of pumpkin spice. Nothing compares to fall in New England.
I know I am always the first to say that I am getting south as soon as possible. South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida are on my mind everyday- I won’t lie. The amount of times in the winter when I’m trudging to class in the snow I think “if I was in South Carolina it wouldn’t be like this.” But, the fall truly makes me fall in love with Massachusetts and New England as a whole.
My entire life I have lived in Massachusetts and experienced fall in the central and western Massachusetts area. However, after hiking with Jack in Vermont this fall, I have fallen in love with how gorgeous the green and clean area of Vermont is. New York in the fall just reminds me of Gossip Girl and makes me want to rewatch it over and over again. I’ve never had a chance to really experience New York in the fall or in general.

The fall just makes me want to wrap up in a warm blanket, listen to Red (Taylor’s Version) on repeat, and play with my dogs outside. Once the air starts to get chilly, it is instant nostalgia to the idea that as soon as the air gets cold it’s time to start playing Christmas music and putting up all the decorations. Even though I couldn’t tell you the first thing about football, besides Tom Brady has always been my athletic idol, we now support the Chiefs because of Taylor and Travis, choosing a cute tailgate outfit, and I loved my high school football team’s color. The fall inspires me to become a football fan or just enjoy the aesthetic of a football game.
Cliche as it is, I actually do love pumpkin spice. I have about fifty pumpkin candles in my room… okay maybe five but who needs five candles at a time. My favorite fall drink from Starbucks isn’t the pumpkin spice latte, but the pumpkin cream cold brew. I’m also a huge fan of any kind of pumpkin bread, muffin, or pie.
I wouldn’t trade my New England fall for anything. There’s so many things on my fall list that I still need to do before December!
Hannahlane Fall 2023 To Do List:
- Go apple picking
- Pumpkin painting
- Attend a football game
- Scenic fall hike
- Watch a good Halloween movie
- Bake an apple or pumpkin pie
I love a good list, I could go on forever with the things I would like to do this fall. Making a list is my favorite way to feel organized and a therapeutic way to deal with my anxiety. My anxiety has been high this month with being busy on campus from 8am-8pm Monday-Thursday and some seasonal stressors. So, things like being outside in the crisp fall air, reading, and writing/making lists help me navigate these stresses and feel accomplished when I can physically cross something off my to do list.
As we at UMass enter midterms, I am manifesting nothing but amazing things for you all! Remember to take time for self care in between studying (or if you’re like me stressing about an exam you probably haven’t even taken yet). As for anyone else, I hope you had an amazing and relaxing long weekend that rejuvenated you for the week ahead!
Xoxo,
Hannahlane
