Midnights Predictions

I’m literally having trouble writing this because I am so so excited. Taylor released the tracklist for her Midnights album coming out October 21st! It’s so exciting getting a whole new album amidst the re-recordings (I might pass out when Speak Now is re-recorded). However, when there’s a new album I usually write down what I expect from each song and keep it to myself and then see what I think about the song after it’s released. This time, I thought I would share it with y’all. So here are my sleepless nights Midnights album predictions/thoughts based on the song titles!

  1. Lavender Haze

If you’re a Swiftie your mind immediately goes to “There’s a dazzling haze, a mysterious way about you dear.” One of the first lyrics from Lover. First, I love just the phrase lavender haze and the usage of the color lavender. It reminds me of the spring, the lover album, and light happy thoughts, the color of a pink and light purple sunset on the beach. I have a feeling this one will be one of the happier/lighter songs on the album. Lavender tends to be connotated with relaxation and happiness. However, lavender can also be used to help put you to sleep and all these songs are about restless nights.

  1. Maroon

Another color related song. I already love this because maroon is a UMass color. Maroon is also a deeper shade of red, so I have a feeling this will have some relation to the songs and feelings on Red. Since maroon is a deeper shade of Red, it gives off the vibe of deeper and maybe sadder than Red. But how can you get sadder than All Too Well (10 min Version) (Taylor’s Version)?

  1. Anti-Hero

Taylor claims this is the most she’s gotten into her insecurities. So for my Mirrorball and This Is Me Trying fans- I hate to say it but it gets deeper. Anti-Hero is a synonym for villain, so I feel like she’s going to be painting herself as a villain without fully calling herself one because her intentions are never malicious. For someone who tries so hard and always attempts to do the right thing but is portrayed in the wrong light making them the Anti Hero.

  1. Snow On The Beach Featuring Lana Del Ray

You already know this is going to be a soft/sad ballad because of the Lana Del Ray feature. Seeing snow on the beach to me gives the vibe of something being the opposite of the way it should be. It’s a depressing scene, it’s cold, it’s desolate. Isolation and icy energy.

  1. You’re On Your Own, Kid

Track five!! Track fives are always the saddest and heartbreaking songs on the album. This reminds me of the opposite of Never Grow Up. The idea of being alone in the world once you move out and on. The world can be a cruel place and you have to figure it out by yourself.

  1. Midnight Rain

Leave it to Taylor to have a song mentioning rain. Rain at midnight seems so dark and crestfallen. It paints the picture of a November night looking out the window and watching it pour rain. Reminds me of  “But I miss screaming and fighting and kissing in the rain. And it’s 2Am and I’m cursing your name” from The Way I Loved You. “I do recall now the smell of the rain fresh off the pavement” from Last Kiss. It doesn’t give me the Sparks Fly rain reference vibe “Drop everything now, meet me in the pouring rain. Kiss me on the sidewalk, take away the pain”.

  1. Question… ?

The questions that keep us up at night. What we lay in bed pondering and thinking about when we can’t sleep. I feel like this song is going to refer to unanswered questions after a breakup. (I Bet You Think About Me vibes). Do you still think about me? “The lingering question kept me up. 2AM, who do you love”.

  1. Vigilante Shit

I’m not going to lie, I had to look up what Vigilante means. Which in my research, I found that Vigilante(a character in Marvel universe) is an anti-hero (these were the exact words to describe this character. Taylor is beyond creative for this. Things are always tied together and have an even deeper meaning. I don’t fully know what to make of this song, but I have a good feeling this is going to be added to my workout playlist.

  1. Bejeweled

When I heard this title, my first thought was the Look What You Made Me Do music video when Taylor is covered in jewels in the bathtub. My second Taylor related thought when reading Bejeweled was verse 4 of All Too Well (10 minute version) (Taylor’s Version) “A never-needy, ever-lovely jewel whose shine reflects on you”. These are two very different songs one has more of a revengeful tone and the other has more of a depressing reminiscent tone.

  1.  Labyrinth

Whenever I hear the word labyrinth I think of science fiction or some sort of fake simulation. This was another word that I looked up in order to see the dictionary definition. The first definition that came up was “a complicated irregular network of passages or paths in which it is difficult to find one’s way”. After reading this definition it changed my mind on what I expected from the song. I feel like this one is going to be about navigating through a tough relationship and finding your way out despite the hardships and challenges you face in leaving. This reminds me of It’s Time To Go and how sometimes it can be hard to see that despite the fact it’s easier to stay in something you already know even when it’s bad for you because it’s familiar you need to be able to see when it’s time to go. A quote my mom told me, that reminds me of this It’s Time To Go energy, and why many people tend to stay in bad situations because they’re familiar is “the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know.”

  1. Karma

Unreal. What goes around comes around. This is giving Reputation energy and I feel like this track is going to be another one perfect for my workout playlist.

  1.  Sweet Nothing

I truly don’t know what to expect of this song. It could be a post breakup song. Sometimes how nothing or silence is better than anything else. The silence and the lack of communication after a breakup.

  1. Mastermind

Taylor Allison Swift is a mastermind. This song may be kind of like The Man and about women’s empowerment and how strong and dominant the female mind can be or it could also be something along the lines of a John Mayer type Dear John. “You are an expert at sorry and keeping lines blurry. Never impressed by me acing your tests.” The idea that your boyfriend controls everything or masterminds/manipulates you.

All I can say is that October 21st cannot come fast enough. It’s going to be so exciting to listen to a whole new Taylor album with thirteen new songs to analyze and sing. Let me know your thoughts!!

Xoxo,

Hannahlane
